Current Airline Surfboard Baggage Policies out of SoCal 2016:
As you may have heard, or felt, Airlines love to burn surfers. At least they burn their money for flying with surfboards. You do have the option to rent a surfboard at your destination but that can be a gamble. For surf travel, you have to factor in the cost of airline surfboard bag fees into your trip cost. So here I have listed some of the current airlines flying around with their policies
The Gold:
Singapore Airlines – FREE 2 boards in a bag. Must be under 90llbs
Malaysia – Free but only up to 8 feet. Bigger bags have a charge
Australia – Free on most routes
New Zealand – Free on most routes
Silver:
Alaska Air – $25 – PER BOARD 2 boards in a bag. Must be under 9foot 7 and under 90llbs
Air Canada – $50 – PER BOARD up to 2 boards in a bag. Must be under 90llbs
Spirit – $95 Charges for a luggage or a surfboard bag no matter what, but for $95 you can have a fully stuffed surfboard boardbag up to 10 feet. Must be under under 100lbs
Bronze.
American $125 up to 2 boards in a bag, Must be under 90llbs
Avianca – $125 up to 2 boards in a bag, Must be under 90llbs
Take their medals away and boycott them!
United – $200 on international routes per board bag
Delta – $200 up to 2 boards in a bag
Hawaiian – Boooooooooooooooooooooo – don’t even put a towel in your board bag cause if you are overweight they Buuuurn you!
